Khor Virap (via Small Things in Big Numbers)

The long distance spans from Turkey's Mt. Ararat in the background to Armenia's Khor Virap Monastery on the dark hill, and the lush farmlands surrounding it. A short bus ride from Yerevan, it's one of the most popular tourist sites in the country. The current version of the church was built up around a much smaller construction and pit used to imprison Saint Gregory the Illuminator for 14 years in the late 200s. This fellow Grigor Lusavorich is credited with bringing Christianity to Armenia, which made it the first country to officially adopt the religion in 301. It's also said that Lusavorich only survived due to the secret charity of a local Christian widow who threw bread down to him daily.
